"I've played music on the radio by many great songwriters, but I can think of no finer lyric writer than Dee Shipman. She has a great way with words, and a highly creative mind!"

- David Hamilton

"This was the very first lyric I ever wrote that anyone, other than me, had put to music!

I'd always written, since the age of four............ in fact I remember being surprised that learning the alphabet was in order to be able to read! That was a bonus - I'd just naturally assumed it was so I'd be able to write down all the words in my head!

Then as I grew up, I wrote in the exercise books my mother would buy for me from Woolworth's....the red shiny covers with wavy lines holding between them poems, stories, plays, songs written to the music that came along with them inside my mind!

Many years later, at school I wrote a complete version of Carmen set in a school, which I then directed, aged eleven!

And so it continued............ I 'graduated' to writing my own lyrics to famous pieces of music, practicing, practicing the art of the lyricist, though I had no idea that that was what I was doing - I just HAD to write!

The first lyric I ever showed to anyone was called Innocent Heart, written to the music of Forbidden Games..............

Norman Newell, the writer of 'More', and a legendary record producer, came to stay for the weekend; and sitting at our breakfast-room table one morning, he suggested that the way I interpreted songs as a singer (he was just producing my first album, for which Roger Webb conducted, played piano, and arranged all the music) made him sure I loved words, and maybe I should try writing lyrics?

So that's when I showed him 'Innocent Heart' - and he went a bit quiet, and then just said

"Yes".

So I began to write lyrics to rhythms that I heard in my head; and one day, sitting talking with Roger about what was wrong with the music business, he casually said

"Well, you'd better write your own material then. I write music - why don't you come up with some words?"

And I replied, just as casually

"I happen to have some here, actually.............." And I gave him 'Born Again'.

He glanced at it, then folded it up and put it in his pocket - and nothing further was said!

About six weeks went by, during which we worked together on the album, met socially, and not once did he mention my lyric And I was so insecure about it, I didn't dare bring up the subject!!

Then one afternoon he turned up at our flat in London, went straight to the piano, and said

"Right - your song" Then he gave me my first lesson in songwriting:

"You have enough words here for two songs", he told me. "Listen to this..." and he began playing a melody. "Now, cut the lyric to fit that".

And over the next half lour or so, sitting at the piano next to Roger, that's exactly what I did.

And when we'd finished, and he sang the song through to me as he played, I glowed inside! And I found the courage to say

"So you do think I can write then?" And he just grinned his slow lazy smile, and said

"Write twelve more, so we have enough to go into the studio to demo..........."

So I took that as a yes!"

Born Again
(Dee Shipman / Roger Webb)

I am born again
In you I am born again
In my mirror I don't see
The waiting girl I used to be
Now you've given love to me
I'm born again
Born again.............

With your love I see
How much I once didn't see
Though I looked, I never saw
That love was what I waited for
Your love makes me strong and sure
I'm born again
Born again.........

You brought a love to me
That no-one else could give
So here I am, I'm yours
You taught me how to live
And with the dawn...........
I'm reborn..............

I am born again
In you I am born again
Grass grows greener, sky more blue
I see the whole world fresh and new
All because I'm loved by you
I'm born again
Born again............

Rhyme chime, travelling time
Rhyme chime, travelling time
Rhyme chime, travelling time
Rhyme chime, travelling time.............

(Winds whisper
Bellbirds ring
A birthday celebration now
Waves ripple
Songbirds sing
A love re-incarnation now

Winds whisper
Bellbirds ring
A birthday celebration now
Waves ripple
Songbirds sing
A love re-incarnation now

Winds whisper
Bellbirds ring
A birthday celebration now
Waves ripple
Songbirds sing
A love re-incarnation now.......

You brought a love to me
That no-one else could give
So here I am, I'm yours
You taught me how to live
And with the dawn..........
I'm reborn..............

I am born again
In you I am born again
Grass grows greener, sky more blue
I see the whole world fresh and new
All because I'm loved by you
I'm born again............
Born again.........
Born again...........
