"Every song I have translated is well translated, the one who works on the very difficult songs with me is Dee Shipman. I know her telephone number by heart, and her fax. It goes back and forth - 'No! I don't like this word!' And she comes back and says 'Because you don't understand English!' So I have to convince her and she has to convince me, and the rapport is fantastic."

- Charles Aznavour

I honestly can't remember where we were when we began writing this song............ it was either at my home in Chelsea, The Cricket House, or maybe in our country house - most probably at both; because it went through a number of different stages...............

I think Petula had had the melody, and possibly the title too, in her head for quite a while before she and I even started writing the first draft of the book, for the show which was then called "Amen!", ( only much later, when Fay Weldon became involved with the book, was it retitled, at her suggestion, "Someone Like You", which was my title for the big love duet between Abigail and The Major, the role created by Dave Willetts.)

"Home.." is one of my favourite of our songs from this show, and, unusually for a 'simple' song, it was actually easy to write! Petula's a consummate melodist, and listening to her playing this tune, I was able to put myself into Abigail's body, mind, and heart, to 'become' her.........and then I knew exactly what she was thinking and feeling, on her own in a war-ravaged alien land, and yet, against all the odds, still absolutely certain that things would turn out right....... !"

Home Is Where The Heart Is
(Dee Shipman / Petula Clark)

I can hear my heart song saying
It's been so long
Will this be where you belong?

Never thought I'd hear it playing
Now it's so strong
Could this be where I belong?

Will this be home
Now I've heard that music
For they say that 'Home is where the heart is'
Every heart has music of it's own
And now I hear it playing
Now I hear it saying

No matter where the start is
Home is where the heart is
Home is where the heart is
Home

Here it's clear and bright and warming
Sun on a wing
The song only home can bring
Shining like a promised morning
Sweeter than spring
A song for a soul to sing

This is my home
Now I've heard that music
For they say that 'Home is where the heart is'
Every heart has music of it's own
And now I hear it playing
Now I hear it saying

No matter where the start is
Home is where the heart is
Home is where the heart is
Home
