"Every song I have translated is well translated, the one who works on the very difficult songs with me is Dee Shipman. I know her telephone number by heart, and her fax. It goes back and forth - 'No! I don't like this word!' And she comes back and says 'Because you don't understand English!' So I have to convince her and she has to convince me, and the rapport is fantastic."

If I Could Be Somebody Else
(Dee Shipman / Charles Aznavour)

If I could be somebody else
Just for the moment not myself
And get away from life’s routine

If I could only have the choice
To change my name or face or voice
Become someone I’ve never been

Maybe a padre or a prude
Or esoteric or plain crude
A lawyer or a libertine who’d
Dance nude!

I’d alter life-style day to day
Not give a damn what people say
A diff’rent man, a new demeanour

If I could be somebody else
I’d have a vast parade of shells
And turn by turn they would be shown
A Samurai or matelot
Tibetan monk, or gigolo

Every career but my own!
Shuffling the cards and having fun
Doing in war what must be done
Cutting my way through life and owned
By no-one

What satisfaction I would find
If I could leave myself behind
And take a different persona

If I could be somebody else
And have an accent that excels
I could put everyone at ease

My quiet confidence and charm
Would first intrigue and then disarm
And bring the women to their knees

The pampered, popular, and bright
Look in the mirror with delight
At a reflexion that agrees
They’re just right..!

As I’m uglier than sin
And I don’t fit inside my skin
Not seeing me would really please me

If I could be somebody else
Instead of someone who repels
I’d light your days up with a smile

You’d love me for myself alone
Not what I say,’ be more your style
You’d never feel the urge to spend
Another night with other men
Leave me alone and drunk again,
Heart-broken

But what’s the diff’rence who I play?
I can’t forget you, night or day
It makes no diff’rence either way

If it’s my fate to still remain me
