"Every song I have translated is well translated, the one who works on the very difficult songs with me is Dee Shipman. I know her telephone number by heart, and her fax. It goes back and forth - 'No! I don't like this word!' And she comes back and says 'Because you don't understand English!' So I have to convince her and she has to convince me, and the rapport is fantastic."

- Charles Aznavour

We were on tour, prior to coming into the West End with 'Someone Like You', and had arrived in York.

I liked to go into a different part of the auditorium each performance, to hear and see the audience reactions, also what they were seeing and hearing; if there were any things that didn't work for any part of the audience because of ;blind spots' etc........

This particular night I was sitting in the front row of the Circle, watching the scene in Act 2 between the Major and Abigail, played by Dave Willetts and Petula; the dialogue was okay, but it was an emotional scene - what's called,in musicals, a golden moment, when the emotion gets too big for words alone....... but there was no song!

I started to have a chat with myself in my head - "So would it be a duet?"

"No. it's a solo that's needed here, for the Major to sing as Abigail leaves the stage..a song ABOUT her, rather than to, or with, her!"

"So what would he be singing?"

"Well, they'd previously been talking about how sometimes we know something is right, and that knowing makes even complicated things seem falling in love when you thought it would never, could never, happen again. All the arguments we have with ourselves against commiting, because it's so complicated - but when it's right, love is so easy!"

I felt in my bag for something to write on, found my cheque book, and my pen - and sitting there in the darkness, I started writing on the back of the cover........

When the curtain came down, I went backstage to Petula's dressing-room, read her the completed lyric, and said

"Okay, can we write this tomorrow morning......?", .

So we did!

So Easy
(Dee Shipman / Petula Clark)
But when it's right
Love is so easy
Familiar and known
Like a heart coming home
To its rest
The sun going down
The earth going round
So easy

And when it's right
Somehow you know it
No questions
No proof
Love's a gift and a truth
You accept
The day into night
The dark into light
So easy

Love knows your mind
Reads between the lines
Helps you see yourself
Kind...... is reaching out to kind
So you can be yourself

When love is right
The world keeps turning
Though nothing has changed
Nothing's really the same
As before
With her I am me
With her love will be
So easy

Feels so comfortable
There's nothing we can't say
So there's no need to say anything
Each thought is heard..........
Without a single a word...........
Within a look...........
A long - remembered book
You love
And rediscover........

When it's right
Love is so easy
Familiar and known
Like a bird heading home
To its nest
I can't let her go
Now loving her's oh
So easy

Easy to see
She is right for me
So nothing will be easier, I know
Then loving her, and never letting go
I must never
Never ever
Let her go.....................!
