"Every song I have translated is well translated, the one who works on the very difficult songs with me is Dee Shipman. I know her telephone number by heart, and her fax. It goes back and forth - 'No! I don't like this word!' And she comes back and says 'Because you don't understand English!' So I have to convince her and she has to convince me, and the rapport is fantastic."

Two Worlds
(Dee Shipman / Charles Aznavour)

Two worlds
Live side by side but never see
Each sep’rate world is part of me
One cold and dark, one light and free
I feel them both with all my being

Two worlds
In one a prisoner of birth
In one a passport for all Earth
Half trav’IIer, half a man apart
I carry both worlds in my heart

Two worlds
That turn by turn are friend and foe
The one the people think they know
The one inside I never show
That comes alive behind a closed door

Two worlds
Though one’s preoccupied with caste
And one rebels against the past
Each knows its value to my art
I carry both worlds in my heart

Life is a constant war I’m fighting
I’m like a man who has to choose
Between two women who delight
Which one is wrong for me, or right
Which one I keep, which one I lose

Two worlds
Where diff’rent voices blend and sing
Where courtesan duets with king
Each fool or actor has their part
I carry both worlds in my heart

Two worlds
Confined in one they must get by
Weighed down with ‘if’ and ‘how’ and ‘why’
One glad to dance a joyous lie
One resting on its name and high rank

Two worlds
The children of the freedom street
The old guard of the Royal elite
And bitter feelings don’t depart
I carry both worlds in my heart

Two worlds
One that my family represent
One where my simple soul’s content
To join the young in their intent
To celebrate a brave new century

Two worlds
But self-respect and pride can hurt
And so both sides remain alert
Afraid old envies may re-start
I carry both worlds in my heart

If one world gets too hard to bear, then
I have the other to turn to
But though accepted everywhere
Detached, I hover between chairs
Half citizen, half passing through

Two worlds
So diff’rent, yet I have to say
From neither can I break away
Or I would just be torn apart
I carry both worlds in my heart
In my heart
