"Every song I have translated is well translated, the one who works on the very difficult songs with me is Dee Shipman. I know her telephone number by heart, and her fax. It goes back and forth - 'No! I don't like this word!' And she comes back and says 'Because you don't understand English!' So I have to convince her and she has to convince me, and the rapport is fantastic."
"Charles had sent me the song in French, as always : now, my French is not great.......... in fact I usually say that I don't speak fluent French, but happily I do speak fluent
So my strategy for writing this song, Toi et Moi, in English, was the same one I always use for his songs - to keep the essence of his content, using parallel metaphors and images, so it becomes as if Aznavour wrote in English.
When I finished I faxed it over to him. (it was before e-mailing was the norm!); and a few minutes later he called me, and said
"Yes, it's good! There's just one thing I don't know if I understand........'pleasure me'? This is English?"
"Oh yes," I said. "That's English"
Then he started repeating it, trying out the sound of it, how it felt in his mouth.........."Pleasure me........pleasure me.......pleasure me..." in his unique deep throaty french - accented voice.
"Will you please stop saying that!!"
"So, it's English?"
"Does it mean what I think it means?"
A pause........... and then
"Okay, in that case I sing it!"
And he did, first to me, then on his own CDs and shows, and then later with Celine Dion as well....
And still every time I hear it, I'm also hearing him saying
"Pleasure me..... Pleasure me........Pleasure me....." softly into my ear!"
And Me (Dee Shipman
/ Charles Aznavour)
You and me
Two hearts that melt and flow
We leave the world we know
To voyage breathlessly
Our bed the sea
And in its waves
Just you and me
You and me
Free of wrong and right
Of all taboos and lies
And in our endless night
Come dreams and whispered sighs
To you and me
Through deserted hopes
That we must all endure
Love has filled our emptiness and waiting
The unprotected children that we were before
Turned into you and me
Reborn in love once more
Beyond all doubt and fears
On passion's fantasy
To God - created spheres
For you and me
When I had no faith
You taught me how to care
Giving me a second chance of living
Most words are only words
But yours become my prayer
My body and my soul
You echo everywhere
Until the early morning light
Make love to me
I yield you every dawn
So all my days can be
Drowned in a sea
Of you and me
